Driving in Tucson is weird at first. It's the only city I've visited where left-turning traffic doesn't go first at intersections with dedicated turn lanes and turn-lane signal lights. Or maybe it's vice-versa... whichever way you're used to, it's probably backward in Tucson. It's the kind of subtle change that you can't put your finger on until you notice that your level of driving frustration is going up slightly every time you have to make a left. I asked a couple of locals, just to make sure I wasn't imagining things, and they agreed that it is different there.
You also can't make a left turn between lights on any major thoroughfare, because raised medians separate opposing traffic on these roads. To reach a destination on the left side of the street you have to drive past it, then use one of the many u-turn only lanes to backtrack and come at your goal from the opposite direction. I'm sure they prevent a lot of traffic accidents by keeping people from turning across traffic, but it's pretty disorienting at first.
I hope it doesn't sound like I'm down on Tucson. The city just has certain quirks that anyone considering a move should be aware of.
